Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between a psychologist, a psychiatrist, and a therapist/counsellor?

    — A psychologist is someone who specializes in psychology, has attained at least a Master’s degree in psychology, and has successfully completed at least one year of supervised training along with the appropriate licensing exams. Psychologists assess, diagnosis, and treat a range of mental health disorders and other conditions impacting ones mental health. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialized training in working with psychiatric issues and prescribing medication. A therapist/counsellor is someone who may not have completed relevant education or training.

  • Are my sessions with a psychologist confidential?

    — Confidentiality is of critical importance when you talk with a psychologist and the information can only be released with your written consent. Exceptions to confidentiality and privacy are governed by law and include if there is a risk of suicide or harm to another person, abuse of a vulnerable person, or if your file is part of a subpoena. In case of these your psychologist will work with you to ensure the least information is shared so as to protect your privacy, confidentiality, and trust in your psychologist.

  • How long will I work with a psychologist?

    — There are many factors that impact the length of psychological services including what has brought you to see a psychologist and how long the issue has been a problem. The most important factors are the fit between you and your psychologist. If the approach makes sense to you and you are ready to take the appropriate steps that you and your psychologist have agreed upon, you will notice some changes quickly.

  • What does a session cost?

    — The College of Alberta Psychologists outlines a fee schedule and a typical session is $220. The cost of a psychological assessment including the report write-up will be discussed between you and your psychologist. *A portion of the cost for psychological services may be covered by extended health insurance plans. Direct billing is available for a number of different insurance plans.

*Please note that there is a 24 hour cancellation policy in place when booking sessions. Less than 24 hours notice will result in a full session fee.

  • What if it is an emergency?

    — Just as with physical health, mental health has emergencies. If it is an emergency you should contact the mental health crisis line (1-877-303-2642) or present to the nearest emergency department or urgent care centre.
